So You Want to Bolt Your Hubcaps On?

Author : Kurt Reis
Your wheels need to be set up correctly in order to accommodate a bolt on hubcap. The lug nuts need to have outside thread for the hubcaps that screw down, or the lug nuts need to be flanged or contain a washer insert for the hubcaps that bolt on behind the lugs.In addition, all of the bolt on hubcaps are made to fit a particular wheel rim. The depth that the hubcap sits need to be perfect in order for the locking mechanism to reach the lugs and every wheel is different. Also the holes in the hubcap need to be the same distance apart as the wheel in order to bolt up and this differs from model to model. In other words, there are no universal "bolt on" hubcaps on the market because every vehicle is different. Some car companies have been bolting them on for years. Honda hubcaps have always bolted on as have Saturn's. Others such as some GM and recently many Chevrolet hubcaps also bolt on. Certain Chrysler and dodge hubcaps are starting to bolt on after several years of poor design, most notably the mini vans. Some such as Toyota hubcaps, Volkswagen hubcaps and most Ford hubcaps do not as of yet bolt on and these are the covers that most have problems with. So what can you do?Most non lockable factory original hubcaps are designed with a wire retention system. The clips, or tabs that hold the retaining wire on the wheel covers are made of plastic and lost are quite fragile. Careless handling causes these tabs to break which takes the critical tension from the wire. This is when the losses happen. Most of these hubcaps will remain on the wheel if handled properly, so careful handling is critical when removing and installing the hubcaps. If the hubcaps are already damaged and you wish to replace them with good quality Custom hubcaps. Make sure you select a style that is constructed with metal retaining tabs. The auto parts and bargain store brands are usually constructed with retaining tabs that are more fragile that the original ones that you are replacing, so make sure you choose a quality hubcap with a solid metal retaining system. Not unlike other purchases, you get what you pay for.For all of your hubcap and wheel needs, visit Hubcap Heaven and Wheels.

Choosing the Right Jeep Tires

Author : Mark Neustedt
When choosing what jeep tires you want to run on your rig, there are several factors you need to look at, such as tread pateren, tire size and of course, what type of driving you will be doing with your jeep.If you are among the few jeep owners who rarly if ever take your jeep off-road, then there are only two factors you need to look at.If you live in an area that receives little or no snow, then your basic radial jeep tires will do just fine.If you live in an area that receives moderit to heavy snow fall, or you plan on driving in the mountians in the winter, then you would want to go with a more agresive mud and snow tire for your rig.If you are among the majority of jeep owners and love taking your jeep off-road, then you need to look at more aggressive jeep tires. You have a wide selection of off-road jeep tires to choose from including the more aggressive style of the mud and snow tire, the very popular mud trrain, and one of the most popluar off-road jeep tires, the supper swamper. In the end, it is you, the jeep owner who will know which type of jeep tires will be best suted for your jeep.Mark Neustedt is a life long off road enthusiast and jeep owner. You Think There is Traffic Now?

Author : Lance Winslow
If you think that traffic is bad now just listen to the hokum the Global Warming Alarmists are purporting now. They say; just wait until Global Warming raises the sea level 28 feet in the next 10 years? Imagine the traffic there will be when there is nowhere to drive. Quick buy a boat? Move to the mountains, prepare for super storms; Hurricanes and Typhoons ten times Hurricane Katrina and Tsunamis able to cover continents. Then where will you drive your SUV they say, quickly blaming all the owners of gas-guzzlers? I say to them, I will drive a bigger SUV one which floats and not worry about it. I am thinking a big RV that is also a boat you see?http://www.motorhomeamerica.com/coachwatch/terrawind.aspThe fact is that most conservatives are prepared for anything and most liberals are looking for any opportunity to play victim, which is good actually because they are so good at it. I recently discussed this with a liberal who said they lived by the beach and so I asked them if you really believe this garbage you are putting out, why do you live by the water? The said they didn't care because the Federal Government would take care of any costs that were incurred. I said you mean any damage, which is incurred due to your lack of responsibility. They told me I had an unusual but interesting perspective, but clearly disagreed telling me it is government's job to protect me. I said perhaps, yet you are asking them to use my money to protect you and being a taxpayer this concerns me. They explained how the tax cuts were dumb and how George Bush is hurting America. I said sure and your right to be irresponsible and this your perspective. I said goodbye shaking my head and thought we do not have Global Warming we have too many hot heads which are raising the temperature in mankind's sound and fury. Become a Test Driver for Car Magazines -- a Dream Job for Automotive Enthusiasts

Author : David Bellm
Imagine getting paid to drive some of the world's greatest cars -- Mercedes, Corvette, Porsche, Viper, and others. Sounds great? Now picture doing that on luxurious all-expense-paid trips to exotic locations, where you hang out with some of the biggest names in the auto industry. That's everyday life for car-magazine test drivers.Hard to believe? You're not the only person who thinks so. I've worked as a car-magazine test driver since 1999 and I still get looks of astonishment when I tell people what I do for a living. Getting a job like this seems like it would be as hard as winning the lottery. But the truth is, you don't have to be working for big, glossy sports-car magazines to enjoy a great job as a test driver. There are countless other publications that use test drivers. And you don't need extraordinary luck or rare talent to get into this profession.Granted, it's not as easy as applying to get a part-time job at the mall, or even like going after a typical office job. But it's also not a frustrating, one-in-a-million chance like trying to become a rock star or a Hollywood actor either. Far from it.There isn't a pre-specified way to become a car-magazine test driver as there is for, say, becoming a doctor or lawyer. So you have to pretty much find your own path into the field. That may sound intimidating, but it's actually another one of the profession's upsides -- people can work their way into test-driver jobs from widely varying experience and education. For example, one of my colleagues was working in a retail bookstore before becoming a test driver. He got into an automotive publication by taking a relatively easy job in a publisher's photo library. The photo library worked with the company's automotive division a lot, so he was in a prime position when a job opened up there. Now he hangs out at racetracks, drives Jaguars and Corvettes, and goes on press trips to Hawaii and Palm Springs. His story is fairly typical. Plenty of people -- men and women alike -- get into the profession in similar sorts of ways. And you might be surprised at how quickly things can move along toward getting such a job if you put your mind to it. Although every person's career progresses at a different pace, three to five years is a pretty normal time for breaking into becoming a test driver. Not bad for a job that routinely puts you behind the wheel of $60,000 cars for a week at a time. For anyone who loves cars, being a test driver is like a fairy tale mixed with a weekend in Vegas -- you can't help but be amazed by some of the things you get to do. It takes more effort to get these jobs than it does to break into other, more mundane fields. But it's well worth it.For more information on how to become a test driver, go to: http://www.autiv.com/David Bellm is a seasoned test driver and automotive writer. His work has been featured in a wide variety of online and print publications.

2006 Toyota Tundra Review

Author : Stuart Simpson
Well, I've been shopping again. I have been looking at a couple of trucks and I like the Nissan Titan. It's nice and has a lot of features. I am a Toyota fan and I do like the Tundra. It's based upon the Sequoia frame – rather – they share the same frame, so it rides nice. The 271hp V8 helps tote things around, too. With a 6800-pound towing capacity, even if you have the double cab, you still have room for the family and the camper and the boat and the gear . . .whew.One of the neat things about the new trucks is style. When I opened the door, I was surrounded in leather. The DVD navigation system may be a bit much for my use, but the double cab had a rear seat DVD player that would be perfect for the kids. It also had a vertical sliding rear glass, just like my 4runner and Sequoia.I can't decide if I'd rather have the Access cab, or just go ahead and get the double cab. The access cab has almost a full size door opening up into the back seats, and I probably won't be hauling around any big adults in the back. Unless they wanted to watch the DVD player. It may sound odd, but you can get a limited slip rear end on the 2 wheel drive models. It keeps the rear tire from spinning. . .well, one tire from spinning. I'm sure with that monster engine, it wouldn't take much to get the tires smoking. The mechanical limited slip is an option all unto itself. As I discovered further, I think I'd rather have the entire package of safety features. They are stability control, traction control, brake assist, fog lamps, running lights, and AUTOMATIC limited-slip rear differential. Sounds daunting, but I'm sure this package would be worth it in the long run.So, double cab? SR5 or Limited. Hmm. Step side? Not for me, but it is stylish looking. I'd have to option mine up a bit to get the homelink, DVD's, Leather, and side curtain air bags if I do get the double cab. It's a nice truck. Manly enough for me, but still soft enough the wife could drive it if I let her. If you get a chance, check them out, because Toyota did it right with the Tundra this year.Stuart Simpson

Guide To Getting A Vehicle History Report

Author : Matthew Henderson
Getting the vehicle history report for your car isn't rocket science, but there's a definite technique to doing it correctly. To start with, you need the vehicle VIN number which can be found in several locations throughout the car. By law the VIN number must be prominently displayed in the driver's side door well, the dashboard, on the engine block and on any paperwork that identifies the car and its owner. There are several other places that the VIN number is metal stamped on the car such as inside certain non-moving parts but those vehicle numbers are there to prevent cars from being chopped into pieces, stolen or to identify vehicles that have been in serious accidents. It is definitely against the law to tamper with a vehicles VIN number so in most cases, if you can read the number in more than one location on the car it is probably correct. After that you need to run a VIN check at one of various locations either on the internet or over the phone and shortly thereafter you will have received the complete vehicle history report or a lesser report depending upon exactly what you order. Two of the better known web sites that offer such services oline are Carfax and Autocheck that will run a variety of different car history checks off of the VIN number. Carfax was the first of these companies and has become the internet standard of VIN number checks for used autos. With an unblemished history of excellence and a searchable database of over 3 BILLION records on cars all around the country, there's very little that happens to cars, new and used, that Carfax doesn't know about. For a small fee, you simply enter your personal information, the VIN number of the car you wish to check on, select the information you require about the car and shortly you'll have a printable history on the car you are interested in buying that you can rely on for for honesty, accuracy and dependability.Matthew Henderson is editor at Auto-Fleet.com. Keeping Your Car Like New

Author : Kenneth C. Hoffman
Here are some tips for extending the life of your car and for keeping that new-car-look.[1] Never wipe a dry windshield or car paint. Quartz grains in the
dirt can scratch the glass or paint. Use a wetted cloth or
better yet, a chamois.[2] Replace the water/glycol mix in your radiator with pure distilled
water and anti freeze. Dissolved minerals in the tap water
eventually create acid that will eat away at your radiator core
prematurely.[3] Treat your windshield with Rain-X. Not only is it easier to see
in rainy weather, but bugs, dirt, and bird excrement come off easily.[4] Always fill your gas tank to the top. The space above the gas
level contains water from the air and in certain weather conditions
freezes in the gas line. Only isopropyl alcohol will remove it.[5] Wash the engine compartment with a degreaser twice a year. Dirt
build-up prevents the dissipation of heat. Too high temperatures in
the engine compartment shortens the life of rubber, seals, valves,
and could cause a fire.[6] Always park in the shade if possible and use a sun shade for the
dash. The walk will do you good and the plastic dash board will
stay cool and resist cracking.[7] Don't warm up the car in cold weather or cool it down on hot days.
Do your bit to save gas. That's why they invented hats and gloves.[8] Clean your spark plugs after 3000 miles of driving*. After three
cleanings, replace them with new ones. Dirty plugs is the number
one cause of poor power, low mileage, and slow starting.[9] Don't eat in your car. Food spillage is the most common cause
of bad smells in a car and some stains are impossible to get out.[10] Every time you polish your car, wipe down the interior and
clean the windows for that new car feeling.*Excepting platinum plugs.Love my Civic.

Consider a Performance Exhaust System

Author : Matthew Keegan
Is it time for you to replace your car's exhaust system? Have you noticed rust around your muffler and tailpipe? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then consider replacing your stock exhaust system with a performance exhaust system. Up front you will pay more, but in the end a performance exhaust system just may be the last one you will ever need to purchase for your car.Nothing lasts forever, right? Well, in the case of some performance exhaust systems you can come darn close. Consider this: one top manufacturer of cat-back exhausts [more on what one is a bit later] produces an exhaust system with a one million mile guarantee! How can they do this? By making a product from aircraft quality stainless steel, that's how. That's right; the same steel used by aircraft manufacturers goes into every Borla brand exhaust system to produce a product that is durable and long lasting. Other brands have similar warranties, so I am not saying Borla is the end all or be all product for your car.So, just how does a cat-back system work? By keeping all the important emissions parts in place, a cat-back system incorporates large width exhaust pipes and low restriction performance mufflers into your car thereby lowering exhaust back pressure. A side benefit is the deeper, throatier tone produced by the exhaust system. Because your car's engine is essentially an air pump, a cat-back a/k/a performance exhaust system allows the engine to pump and flow air with less interruption. In summation, more power is freed up and horsepower increases of 5 to 15 percent are well within the range of possibility. One side benefit: you will notice an increase in fuel economy because a performance exhaust system allows your engine to run more efficiently. So, what's not to love about a performance exhaust system? Not much! Even if you aren't planning to keep your car forever, the resale value of your vehicle will also increase with a performance exhaust system installed on your car. You win now with more power and better fuel economy and you can win later when it comes time to sell your car. A true win-win situation, don't you agree?Copyright 2005 -- Matt Keegan is a contributing writer for the Auto Parts Warehouse, a wholesaler of fine Flowmaster and Borla performance exhaust systems.

2006 Ford Taurus: Swan Song

Author : Matthew Keegan
The 2006 model year will end the heralded Taurus name and for this writer it is a bittersweet time as Ford retires what once the best selling car in all of America. When Ford introduced the Taurus along with its cousin the Mercury Sable in the mid 1980s the car represented a radical departure from the standard American car of the day. Fairly large, front wheel drive, and very aerodynamic, the Taurus quickly rose to the pinnacle of the American car sales charts and was the best selling car for several years in a row. A much delayed "reskinning" did not occur until 1996, some ten years after the Taurus and Sable were first released. The new style, perceived by some to be ugly, quickly cost Ford sales as newer and more modern Toyota Camrys and Honda Accords out gained the line. Slight changes in style incorporated with the 2000 model year took some of the edge off, but by then the Taurus was considered to be too old and outmatched by the competition.I purchased an all new 1994 Taurus and kept the car for seven years, racking up 117,000 miles before deciding it was time to trade in the car for something newer. I found the ride to be comfortable, the interior room to be expansive, and I enjoyed the overall style of the car. I was also one of the first people to purchase a Taurus in the then new Hunter Green color, an attractive deep green that was admired by many. When 2001 rolled around, I elected to lease a Saturn L series instead of going with the Taurus. I needed something similar in size with the Taurus and at that time Saturn had a lease deal that could not be beat. In addition, I still wasn't impressed with the Taurus which I felt had been out-engineered by other cars in its class. So, I took home the Saturn and donated my Taurus to the Kidney Foundation. The 2005 model year represented the final year that Ford would offer the Taurus through dealers; for 2006 the Taurus is only available as a fleet car and it is unchanged from the previous year's model. The slow selling Sable was mercifully put to rest one year earlier. For Ford, concentrating on trucks and SUVs meant neglecting much of their car line up, including the Taurus. Bigger and stronger SUVs, including the Expedition and Excursion, were introduced as America's tastes continued to shift from passenger cars to SUVs. In addition, the ever popular F Series pick up trucks went through regular style and engineering changes every four years or so as did the Explorer, Ford's midsized SUV.Higher gas prices and changing tastes are once again impacting Fords' line up. The beefy Excursion is gone and new cars including the Five Hundred and Fusion are now part of the line up. These two new models represent a fresh change for Ford and a promise that the attention once given to the Taurus would be given to the new models. For that, I am glad.Copyright 2005 -- Matt Keegan is a contributing writer for Auto Parts Canada, a wholesaler of fine

You Can Examine Your Shock Absorbers

Author : Matthew Keegan
Bouncing down the road one day it occurs to you that things are just not what they should be. The road you are riding on is as smooth as glass, yet your car is jostling up and down like nobody's business. You enter an upcoming curve in the road and quickly learn that the control you had over your car was lost just moments before. Suddenly, the vehicle careens off the road, goes down through a ditch and up an embankment before coming to rest against a fence adjacent to Tony's garage. You are in luck: you aren't dead and your car is at Tony's, who happens to be your favorite mechanic.Yes this story is ridiculous, exceedingly so. All joking aside, your shock absorbers [or struts in the case of some cars] plays a vital part in your vehicle's suspension system. When certain signs of wear and tear become apparent, you must replace your shocks or otherwise you can put yourself in danger and/or damage your car.A shock absorber works by damping the compression and extension of the vehicle's suspension springs to prevent ongoing movement. Shocks work to diminish road impact, prevent excessive bounce back, reduce sway, and improve general road handling. When your shocks are functioning properly your vehicle grips to the road whether you are braking, negotiating a curve in the road, driving on uneven roads, or experiencing powerful side winds. When worn out, shocks can play a part in you losing control of your car putting you and everyone else in harm's way.How often should you replace your shocks? One manufacturer suggests no less than once every 50,000 miles, but that depends on whether you frequently drive on coarse roads [in this case it will need to occur sooner] or it could even be much later if you do mostly local driving, the roads are well maintained, etc. There is a simple test you can perform on your car to establish whether your shocks need replacing. It isn't absolute, therefore you may want to take your vehicle to a garage to make certain:Take hold of a corner of your vehicle's bumper.Press down on the bumper with all of your strength and then let go.Your shocks are probably okay if the bumper drops down and returns in place without rebounding again. Slight movement is okay, but if it continually moves, then that particular shock is no longer effective. Duplicate the test on the remaining three corners of your vehicle.Other telltale signs of shock wear can be observed through leakage [although a leak is not always indicative of wear] and by observing tire wear patterns. Finally, if you are simply experiencing motion sickness every time you go for a ride, then that can be the best indicator that your shocks or struts need replacing. No kidding here!Matt Keegan is an auto enthusiast and contributing writer for PitStop Auto Parts, a seller of discount shocks and suspension components including

You Can Examine Your Brakes

Author : Matthew Keegan
Regular brake inspections are an essential part of good automotive maintenance that can save you money and keep your car from wrapping itself around the first tree out of your driveway. Make sure that your brakes and rotors are receiving the proper maintenance by following the steps outlined. Your safety as well as that of your passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers is at stake.1. Time for a free inspection. Many local brake shops as well as national brake repair chains offer customers free brake inspections at no obligation to you. The inspection typically includes the following steps: Check your vehicle's brake pads and shoes for signs of wear; Fill and/or replace hydraulic fluids; Examine rotor/drum wear and calipers; Examine the anti-lock brake system [if you have one]An annual check up of your brakes is wise, but do it more often if you drive well above the national average [about 15,000 miles per year] or if you do heavy stop and go driving.2. Awareness is the key. Most brake system problems can be avoided if motorists would pay attention to certain signs of pending problems including:Your brake warning light comes on.Your brake pedal is either squishy, difficult to push down, or you must pump the brakes to get them to work correctly.Your brakes grind continuously and you hear a loud metallic racket when you push down on them.Your car pulls to one side when you push down on the brakes, instead of stopping in a straight line.Your car jerks to a halt when you push down on the brakes. One or more wheels are strikingly hot even after a brief trip. You observe fluid leaks in the vicinity of any wheel or in the engine section near the master cylinder. If you are an at home mechanic, you can complete your own inspections and fit your vehicle with top notch replacement parts including brake pads and calipers. You can save on parts by purchasing them from a reputable online wholesaler such as Pit Stop Auto Parts who can offer to you top quality parts at sensible prices, typically much lower than what your dealer or an auto parts store would charge you.Take care of your vehicle and it will take car of you especially in an emergency situation where a properly working brake system is an absolute must.Matt Keegan is an auto enthusiast and contributing writer for

Maintaining Your Car Will Make It Last Longer

Author : Matthew Keegan
Regular maintenance of your vehicle will extend its life perhaps well beyond what you or others may think is its normal lifespan. Today's cars can easily top the 100,000 mile mark with many cars on the road exceeding 150,000, 200,000, even 250,000 miles. Ask owners of high mileage cars how they got to that point and most will point to their own rigorous and disciplined maintenance schedules as being the chief factor. By carefully and diligently following a maintenance schedule, you can extend your vehicle's life too. Let's take a look at several important maintenance steps you must take in order to avoid costly repairs and to help you hold onto your vehicle longer.Regular oil changes – The 30 minute oil change specialists recommend that you change your oil every 3,000 miles or three months, while some manufacturers state you only need to change your oil once every 7,500 miles or six months. Opt for more frequent changes than lengthy manufacturer recommended intervals, but change your oil [and oil filter] every 3,000 miles if your car is subject to hard driving.Change your air filter – Your engine will run better and cleaner if you change your air filter at least once per year; more so if you do a lot of "stop and go" driving or put on many more miles per year than average.Rotate your tires – Evenly wearing tires will help ensure that your car stops properly and stays on the road. Have your brakes and shocks inspected too to avoid potential handling and control issues.Transmission fluid – Your transmission isn't guaranteed to run forever. Change your fluid at manufacturer recommended intervals, generally once every 30 or 60 thousand miles. Neglect it and face costly repairs and potentially fatal [to the car] consequences.Drain the radiator – Periodically draining the radiator and replacing the antifreeze will help flush out rust and dirt particles that can clog up your cooling system. When the coolant's rust inhibitors get used up then corrosion will show up within the radiator as well as in the engine blockChange the spark plugs – Some manufacturers have installed long life spark plugs meaning that changing spark plugs once every 60 or even 90 thousand miles or more is a possibility. Keep in mind that the longer your spark plugs sit in place, the more difficult it may be to remove them later. Optimally, replacing your spark plugs once every 30 thousand miles is ideal.Examine your exhaust system – Your muffler, catalytic converter, and remaining exhaust system parts can wear out. A poorly functioning exhaust system saps your engine of needed power.Wash and wax – Yes, your car may mechanically run well, but if the body falls apart, then what do you have left? Regular washings and a once a year wax job should do the trick.Other stuff – Replace your battery, fuel filter, PCV valve, belts, and hoses as needed and every other part that wears out. Sensors come and sensors go; usually you will only have to replace your knock or oxygen sensors if and when a problem arises.Ultimately, refer to your manufacturer's repair book for guidelines as to when to perform maintenance. The key to extending your vehicle's life is in doing the maintenance when needed to head off costly repair bills. Otherwise you will be neglecting your car to the point where it "dies" prematurely. You can extend the life of your vehicle. If you aren't up to the task, hire a qualified mechanic to service your vehicle regularly.Matt Keegan writes for The Parts Bin, a retailer of high quality

Environmentally Sound Automotive Air Filters

Author : Matthew Keegan
When I explain to someone that there are several lines of vehicle air filters available that are environmentally sound I usually receive a quizzical look back from that person. For some motorists the idea of environmentally compatible automotive parts is a foreign concept to them. Yet, when you think about it many parts that come standard on just about any vehicle qualifies for that title. A catalytic converter is one part that everyone knows about, even if they don't understand exactly how one works. So, exactly what is an environmentally sound air filter? Let's take a closer look for all the details. As you probably know the air filter that comes with your car is made predominately of paper with plastic molding holding the filter together. If you change the air filter at recommended intervals – once a year is common – you can easily go through 3, 5, or even 10 or more air filters depending on how long you keep your car as well as how many miles you put on your car. All of these air filters end up in your trash and then go straight to the dump. The paper in the filter will probably disintegrate quickly, but the plastic sits in place perhaps for thousands of years. If this sort of thing disturbs you then take heart. Thanks to race car technology, manufacturers have developed reusable air filters for many production vehicles. If you purchase one for your vehicle it likely will be the last one you ever need. How is that? Because a reusable air filter can be cleaned and put back in your car over and over again. In fact, quality reusable air filters are designed to outlast your car with many guaranteed to last 500,000 miles or more, even up to one million miles!A reusable air filter costs more, with prices running approximately 2-4 times the price of a standard air filter. If you keep your car for any length of time you will get that money back, but if do not you are still helping to show environmental responsibility by keeping our landfills free of unnecessary throw away parts. Two additional benefits of a reusable air filter -- the type that K&N and other top manufacturers produce -- is that it will give your vehicle a boost in horsepower as your engine will run more efficiently. Furthermore, a more efficient engine burns less fuel so your fuel economy goes up too.So, what is there not to like about a reusable air filter? In reality, not much! By installing a reusable [or performance] air filter you help the environment, realize a noticeable gain in horsepower, and you burn less fuel. A true win-win-win proposition, don't you agree?Copyright 2005 -- Matt Keegan is a car fan and automotive writer for the

Tips to Buying a Car

Author : Steve Anderson
I need a car. I've been a pedestrian for too long. I need information. I'll hop on the web. Search for "car buying guides." Whoa! Over 15 million sites/pages! Refine my search. "Free first time car buyer guides" and narrow it down to only 4 million. That's about as refined as I can get right now. Look over the first page of my results, chose some links with names I recognize. Open some pages. Lots of interesting articles. Let's see if I can pull together a cohesive list. What type of vehicle do I need? Notice I wrote "need" not want? I want a cool car, but this is a major investment and cool doesn't really last that long. Do I buy new or used? What kind of driving am I really going to be doing, and in what kind of conditions? How much can I reasonably spend for monthly maintenance? How much can I spend on a loan or lease payment? Should I buy from a dealer, an auction or private sale? How's my credit rating? Where should I buy insurance? Lots of questions to answer, and probably some I haven't included here. Before you search for that cool car, decide exactly what your needs and wants are. Don't buy what you want, buy what you need. Don't get into a cash bind because you spent more than you can really afford because the "cool" factor fades fast but those monthly payments continue. Review your budget to determine how much you can really afford. That means not only the car payment, but insurance and an estimate of your monthly maintenance (gas, oil, etc.)Check your credit so you have an idea of what type of loan you can qualify for. Decide on a firm price (payment or full-purchase), because dealers and salespeople will be doing their best to get more out of you. Be firm and stick to your dollar amount. If financing, decide on a realistic maximum payment you can make. If possible, check with your bank to see what type of loan you qualify for. With the internet, it's now much easier to compare vehicles. Take the time to check out some websites that offer information about vehicles and compare. Don't just rush out and buy the first car you see. Remember, your vehicle is a major investment and unless you can change vehicles every year, this car will probably have to last you 4 or 5 years. Be choosy. Look at the pictures, sure, but READ the information. Check to see if the dealership offers web discounts (that is, if you buy from them they will offer some discount for using the web).Educate yourself about vehicle pricing. Dealerships have to make a profit; otherwise they would not be in business! Simple economics. Dealers will negotiate, but YOU have to be prepared as well. The dealers and salespeople know their bottom line on any vehicle. Again, check the web for information regarding pricing. Ask family and friends to help you learn about vehicle pricing. There are many factors that most people don't even know about.Make certain you qualify for insurance. Check out your state's department of motor vehicles website and learn the minimum insurance necessary. Check around the web and you'll find many major insurance companies with rate comparison features. Use those resources. Be very aware that your past driving record will affect your rates, but also if you are a first time buyer, be ready for slightly higher rates to begin with. After all, the insurance company is really gambling on your not making any claims against the insurance. Think about the type of driving you will be doing and review the "extras" offered by the insurance provider. Also, the type of vehicle you are looking to purchase will affect your rates as well. Older cars usually mean less safety features, so rates will be higher. Your vehicle insurance is just as important as your health insurance.A short note here about car dealerships (and not just the new vehicle showroom guys). I personally have not had good results buying from a private seller. Way too many variables and basically no recourse if something isn't right. Dealers have certain rules and restrictions they must comply with, such as title registration time limits, the lemon law, and the "buyers remorse" (3 day changed my mind) rules. Dealerships must be licensed and follow the laws; private sellers often don't. Dealerships also can provide a wider range of options than a private seller. Go to your state motor vehicle or department of licensing website and educate yourself. What you don't know can hurt you. Also, there is a list called the Customer Service Index (or something similar) which each car maker maintains for dealerships. The ranking indicates who a dealership satisfies customers not only in sales, but also in service. Basically, go to the manufacturer's website, search for customer service index and then navigate the website to find that manufacturer's criteria for a great dealership. Yes it takes time, but this is a major investment. Family and friends can help here as well.Once you have decided what type of vehicle you want, and which dealerships you want to check out (always try at least 2 dealerships, don't just settle on one!), take someone with you, preferably someone knowledgeable about the vehicle you have chosen (a family member or friend you feel comfortable with). That person will probably ask some questions you didn't think of! I'm a wimp when it comes to negotiating, but my hubby isn't, and he knows about cars. I let him do most of the questioning, even though I was the one purchasing the car. Believe me, it helped, because he asked questions I really never thought about.Last, but certainly not least, TEST DRIVE THE CAR! Sounds simple, but it is very important. Just because you found what looks like the car of your dreams, it may still not be right. You need to be comfortable behind the wheel, your sight lines should be clear, you should be able to judge your surroundings based on the size of the vehicle, and you should be able to find all those little areas of vehicle maintenance you can do yourself.Remember, a vehicle is a major investment. It should be chosen with care and deliberate thought. There a many factors to consider and, ultimately, you are the one that has to pay for any mistakes in your choice.Steven Anderson is the Reservations Director for Hawaiian Discount Car Rentals, specialists in car rentals Kauai. The Bad, The Loud, And The Proud

Author : Tyler Brooker
I really like it when I see a car, looking terrible, old, rusted, and dirty, with the speakers just booming, and some young kid driving it. HAH! What a way to make my day. It is clear where some peoples priorities lie. Most of the younger crowd would rather have booming subwoofers, big crazy speakers, and grade A stereo decks, than a nice car.So let me get this straight - If the average 17 year old, generally males, had 1000 dollars to put towards a vehicle, they would spend 300 on the car and 700 on the speaker system. CRAZYNESS!"Aw dude, check out this stereo.... Awesome sound". Yeah, thats swell man, but your car only has 3 wheels. To the more "mature" crowd, sound would be a ridiculus choice over vehicle type. How cool do those kids think they are in there busted cars booming down the road, with their hat on backwords, in an undershirt, with music on louder than than the average person can even handle from the outside of the vehicle? It's clear how cool they look....Exhaust is another one. 300 dollar car, 800 dollar exhaust. And if not full exhaust, then a boom can. This must be so that they have an excuse for loud music. "I gotta be able to hear the tunes over the car man". Brutal. Poor kids. They save up for things like these. Seriously. So now they have 1800 dollars into a car that is worth 300, and the resale is terrible - if at all possible - so they drive it till it dies and start all over with a new one. How hard are they qoing to be kicking themselves when they find out it is a losing investment? Poor kids...Feel free to reprint this article as long as you keep the article, this caption and author biography in tact with all hyperlinks.Tyler Brooker is the owner and operator of Free Sound effects - http://www.free-soundeffects.com, which is the best site on the internet for all effects related information.

The Importance of a Nice Piece of Auto Glass

Author : Christopher Luck
Having a cracked or shattered windshield or window can be one of the most frustrating things about owning a car. And yet, there's no way of avoiding the plethora of forces conspiring against that glass: the rocks, tiny as they may be, will always find their way up off the road and into your windshield, creating those lovely little star-cracks that so many cars are afflicted with.Luckily, professional auto glass repair shops can deal with virtually any problem you can imagine encountering when it comes to fixing glass. And fixing even the tiniest crack or chip in your windshield is the easiest way to save you money down the line, as the slightest neglected blemish can grow over time and spread into a much bigger problem that could even require a complete removal and reinstallation of the glass. You certainly don't want that headache, and you don't want those pesky chips and dings to be there every time you sit down behind the wheel of your car and stare out at the road ahead, reminding you of a nagging imperfection.Of course, imperfections in your auto glass may not only come in the form of scratches, chips, and cracks, but simply in the make up of the window or windshield itself. In a world where we move around constantly aware of the harm of the sun, and take all necessary precautions to protect ourselves from ultraviolet rays, having clear, untreated windows on your car can be a health risk you don't need to be toying with. Tinting the windows of your car can help cut down on the amount of ultraviolet light that streams into your car, doing you and your passengers a favor anytime you drive around on a sunny day for any length of time. Of course, for safety reasons, there are specific laws on the intensity of the tint that can be applied to each window, and these are things your local auto glass repair shop will have knowledge of and adhere to, allowing you to protect your car and yourself without doing anything illegal. It is also vitally important that a reputable glass repair outlet is where you go to get any work done on your car, as you don't want to gamble by using second-rate materials and or repairmen on something as important as your windshield. Though you wouldn't think about it at first, the windshield of your car isn't just a piece of glass that stops water, debris, and other impediments from whirling into the face of the driver, rather it can be a vital safety measure in the unfortunate event of an accident. In the event of a crash which sends the front seat passengers forward, the windshield can be the last measure of resistance from being hurled from the vehicle. And this is why you can't afford to have your auto glass replacement by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. An inordinate amount of injuries and fatalities as a result of automobile accidents occur because the cracked glass of the driver's windshield was not properly replaced by a professional to ensure adequate safety for the passengers. The glass in your car should serve the maximum amount of protection for all those who ride within, from the driver who must be able to see through each window without blemish, to the passengers who don't want an inferior piece of glass to be a source of harm in any way. Make sure the auto glass repair and or installment company you go to will do a competent, professional job, that will last for years to come.Christopher M. Researching Your New Car Before You Buy it

Author : Timothy Moore
What should you really consider when buying a new car? Judging by the conversations of many would-be car buyers, the make, model, and color of a prospective new vehicle are among the first thoughts in a buyer's mind, followed closely by issues of performance (transmission type and horsepower) and available vehicle amenities (for example, leather seats versus cloth, standard locks versus power). However, as worthy (and sometimes fun) as these car purchase issues are to ponder, there are other issues that are more substantial and weigh in more heavily. What are those issues? Let's start with a vehicle's warranty. The purpose and function of a warranty, of course, is quite plain. It serves as a good faith statement from a seller to a buyer that a quality product has been sold. But what is a "better" car warranty? And what makes one warranty better than another? In all cases, the most basic criteria will be the warranty length (i.e. the longer the better). Most vehicles come with at least a three year 36,000 mile warranty, with an option to purchase an extended warranty. But since the cost of extending a warranty can be considerable, it may make more sense to buy a car…with a longer warranty. And some automakers actually offer a ten year 100,000 mile warranty bumper to bumper. Now we're talking value.Another car buying issue that is of equal importance is the residual value of a car after its purchase. As everyone knows, as soon as a car leaves a buyer's lot, it loses a portion of its
value. For this reason, it is definitely a good idea to research the make and model of a vehicle you are thinking of buying. This will provide information on its current value retention, as well as information on how its been holding up in recent years. After all, you aren't going to feel too good about that nice new set of wheels if it takes more than the average 15% "hit" after it has been driven off the lot. Finally, here's a consideration for leasers. Make sure when you lease a vehicle that you check for mileage limitations. On average, these are 12-15 thousand miles per year--with a price per mile penalty for anything in excess of that. The kicker is some of these penalties are big and can add up to thousands of dollars when turning in your vehicle. Also make sure you purchase the available extended warranty to cover your lease term; that way you aren't paying repair bills for a car that you don't even technically own.Selecting a car that has the look and feel you want will go a long way toward guaranteeing that you stay satisfied with your purchase. But doing a little research into your prospective new car's resale value and warranty coverage may go even further toward retaining satisfaction in the vehicle you end up buying. The author of this article is Tim Moore, who publishes a website on Vitamins, herbs, and nutrition which features a section on Antioxidants

The Battery In My Car Keeps Doing Down and I Have to Jump Start My Car

Author : Austin Davis
Reader Question: I have a new battery in my car, but something keeps draining the battery down and I have to keep jump starting my car. What else could be wrong with my car besides the battery? If your new battery is going down "draining" and you have to continually jump start the battery to get the engine to start it is probably one of these problems:• Alternator is not recharging the battery - alternator is faulty and needs to be repaired or replaced• There is a "drain" on the battery, like something is left on.....dome light, radio, trunk light, etc. OR there is some kind of electrical item that is sucking battery power that you are unaware is running...like, a radio amplifier, an electric seat motor, electric antenna motor etc.• A wiring problem, the electricity the alternator IS generating is not getting back to the battery, a broken "ground" wire on the back of the alternator or a faulty battery cable or battery cable end or just a loose or dirty battery cable could be the problem.• Fuse problem, depending on what kind of car this is, some vehicles have an alternator fuse, either under the dash inside the car with the rest of the fuses or under the hood in the larger fuse and relay panel on some newer cars.Bottom line: To properly diagnose a charging system problem, you must check all components on the vehicle. Your mechanic can test the battery "load", the alternator "output", and check for a voltage "draw" or something draining the battery with the engine and key off.Austin Davis is a Car Repair consumer advocate helping his visitors answer their questions about Auto repair and auto mechanic problems. Finding a Great Project Car

Author : David Maillie
Restoring a project car is a fun hobby and can be excellent for relieving stress. Finding the perfect car can be a bit more of a challenge. There are many very popular models and the most popular can be hard to find at a reasonable price. Before you start shopping for the perfect vehicle, set a budget for the entire project. You need to take into consideration the cost of the repairs as well as the price of the car.Ideally, you don't want to spend a fortune on the vehicle itself. You need to allow as much money as possible in your budget for the actual restoration. On the other hand, you don't want a car that is in such bad condition that it would cost a fortune to fix. You want something you can reasonable expect to restore while staying within your budget.Start by determining the features you want in your vehicle. Some may not be very important, such as the color. Others, like the motor or the choice between an automatic or manual transmission may be very important. You need to decide which features you want. Make a list and prioritize these features from most to least important.Where to Look for a Project CarThe internet is becoming a popular place to buy and sell vehicles. Several sites offer cars for sale. The most well known is probably ebay motors. There are benefits and drawbacks to purchasing a vehicle on the internet. The biggest drawback is that you won't be able to inspect the car yourself. You will need to rely on pictures and the vehicle inspection report for information on the condition. You can hire a mechanic to inspect the vehicle for you before you commit to bidding. A certified mechanic can put the car up on the lift and check it out thoroughly. If there is major damage, you will have a better picture of what it will cost to fix. This professional inspection can give you the peace of mind you wouldn't get by bidding on the vehicle based on pictures. The local newspaper is a traditional way people have used for years to find a good project car. This can be a good source when looking for a car. You won't have as much competition in terms of price as you would on ebay. Only local people know about the vehicle, so there is a smaller pool of potential buyers. Another advantage is you will get to inspect the car before you buy.Word of mouth is another way many people find their projects. Friends, co workers or neighbors may know of a great car that is sitting in someone's garage. Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a vehicle. Your friends will probably be familiar with the models you are interested in and may be able to steer you in the right direction. Your automotive mechanic is another good source of information. Many know people with cars that may be for sale.Checking Out the VehicleThe first thing you should check is the vehicle identification number (VIN). You want to make sure the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the title. Also, check the title to be sure it is a regular title. Junked cars are often issued a salvage title. This may not be able to be registered as a normal car, even after restoration.Next, you want to evaluate the work that needs to be done. Consider the number of parts you will need and the cost of the parts. Check the internet for the price and availability of parts for the model you are considering for your restoration project. You want to be sure the vehicle is worth the price you will ultimately pay and if you can do the job and remain within your budget.Inspect the interior. Look at the condition of the upholstery, rugs, dashboard and inside door panels. A stripped down interior will be very expensive to replace. Worn rugs and upholstery are fairly easy to deal with, if the rest of the interior is in good shape. When you look at a vehicle, pay particular attention to the body of the car. Heavy or extensive damage can be very expensive to repair. Take into consideration the price you will pay at the body shop before making the purchase. Look for damage from accidents and rust damage. Check the trunk, under the rugs inside and at the bottom of the doors for evidence of rust.Paint is a large expense in a restoration project. The paint job itself isn't too expensive, if there isn't much body work to be done. Look at the bumpers, chrome headlights and taillights and evaluate their condition. Replacing the lights can be costly, if the lights are cloudy. You don't necessarily need to replace them, they can often be restored. There is a great product available for restoring your lights. New Lite Headlight Cleaner and Restorer will return cloudy headlights to like new condition. Preserving the Classic American Car

Author : David Atkin
If you know me then you already know how I like to talk about the preservation of the classic American cars and muscle cars, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to keep these cars on the roads, so we have a presence of them around.Isn't it enough that our country is getting inundated by imports, and the fact that people are always saying how much better other countries are building cars then we do, well without Henry Ford none of them would be building cars as we know them today, and if I remember correctly he was an American. We need a heavy presence of American cars, just to help put way the dull drab looking imports, you know cars that have a little style and character to offer, not just these cookie cutter expensive, yet cheap built imports, how much better is a BMW, Mercedes or any other import then a good old American car.Buy American people, all I hear is people bitching about the economy, well it seems to me that if we were to buy our own country's products, it would improve our well being, and that we would have a better economy, we would all be a lot happier, if you buy an American car from an American dealer or an individual, you have done your part to help the economy.Let's say that you bought a car from a dealer, he'd have to pay taxes, and that would help the economy, and the car manufacture of American cars would hire Americans to build the cars, and that would also help the economy by keeping the money that the manufacture pays it's employees in our country, and buying things from American companies, therefore improving the economy. This brings me to the whole point of this little rant, if we were all to buy an old classic American car and restore it to it's original glory, we'd be buying parts from American companies and having American businesses restoring those cars, and thereby infusing money back in to the economy, to help build our country's economy back to it's stable old self, we all need to think more like this.David C. BMW 530xi: An Alternative to SUVs

Author : Ryan Finney
Are you looking for all the advantages of an SUV but in a smaller package? BMW may have the answer in the form of its 2006 BMW 530xi wagon. The 2006 model of the wagon is the first 5 series wagon offering from BMW in two years. The 530xi is almost a hybrid of the 530i and X3 or X5. The wagon utilizes a similar all wheel drive system from their popular SUV and attaches that to their 255hp 3L inline 6 cylinder engine. Weighing in at more than 4000 lbs, the wagon is considerably heavier than the sedan version. BMW has attributed this to the all wheel drive system and the redesigned body. The 530xi comes standard with Bluetooth wireless technology, all season traction, dynamic stability control, dynamic brake control and other BMW systems. Starting at $51,400, a consumer can easily run the car price north of $60,000 with options. As usual with BMW, most everything is an option and those options do not come cheap.Even though the 530xi cannot compete with the 530i in performance or fuel economy, it is still a model to consider. Most consumers looking to buy the wagon will be comparing it to an SUV like the X5. In that instance, the wagon performs much better than the X5 in the same categories. Most SUV owners do not go off-road so the 530xi wagon should satisfy all their needs.A great site to use to find parts for your BMW 530xi and any other BMW model is AutohausAZ - BMW parts. They offer a wide selection of OE BMW parts at discount prices.

Tips To Find An Acura Car

Author : Christopher Luck
What steps should you take to find the right Acura car for you to buy? I personally don't enjoy shopping for cars, but it is a necessity if you want to avoid riding the bus for the rest of your life. There are steps you can take to find the car you want at the right price and get it done efficiently. If you decide that you think an Acura car of some sort will be best for you then follow these tips and you can be driving off in your Acura car before you know it.
The first thing you probably should figure out is which model of Acura car you want to buy. Acura cars are offered in a wide variety of models from luxury sedans to sports cars, to SUV models. Do some research and look up the various Acura car models and price ranges so that you will know exactly what you are looking for when you start your search.
Second, get online and do some research on the Acura car you have selected. First, check out the consumer sites and reviews that are available all over the internet. Find out what the positives and negatives are. More importantly, perhaps, than that is to find out about what the right price to pay for one is. If you are considering a used Acura car find out what mileages and years fit your budget the best. If you think you are going to want to buy a new Acura car, then find out what the suggested price is versus the prices most people end up getting after they talk the dealer down a little bit. If you have a trade in you are going to use toward your Acura car, you may want to go ahead and check the value of that as well so you can make sure you get fair compensation.
Once you have checked out and researched online, you need to start heading out to the dealerships. You may want to find out, first, what Acura cars they have by checking the individual dealer websites. Often they have their inventory on there and some starting prices so you will know what you are looking for when you arrive. Mercury A/C Condensers: Giving You a Cool Driving Experience

Author : Joe Thompson
Driving in your faithful Mercury during the summer months should prove to be a cool experience - that is if you're AC condenser is working properly. However, if you do feel that amidst turning on your air-conditioner to its full capacity you still feel sweaty and hot, then you may want to check your AC condenser. The Mercury AC condenser radiates heat of the refrigerant, which at most times is a Freon gas, passed to it by the AC compressor. The AC condenser cools the refrigerant and turns it to a liquid form. The engine fan would usually aid in the cooling of the refrigerant, albeit an additional condenser fan would still be needed. The liquid refrigerant would still be warm but it would not be as hot as the gas in the compressor. An expansion valve would then advance to transform the liquid refrigerant into a cold, gaseous form, so as to once again absorb the warm air inside your automobile.Thinking about how it works the Mercury AC condenser is one of the vital and essential parts needed to keep your air-conditioner working for your Mercury. It could, in a nutshell, be compared to your vehicle's radiator because it works out the same function. The radiator keeps the water circulating throughout the engine to cool, and on the other hand, it is your Mercury AC condenser that keeps the refrigerant flowing through your car's air conditioning system to cool. This important part of the cooling system also helps to ensure that the engine of a vehicle and its components is working at its best.Changing a Mercury AC condenser which has already gone through the usual wear-and-tear would surely ensure you a cool ride, even during those humid summer days.AC condenserMercury AC condenser----------------Joe Thompson is the owner of a successful auto body shop in Ferndale, California. Small Engine Carburetors

Author : Eric Morris
Carburetors are a component of internal combustion engines that generate a combustible mixture of gasoline and air. Carburetors were used in cars in earlier days, but presently, they have been replaced by the electronic fuel injection technology and are being used in smaller machinery like lawn mowers, chain saws, motorbikes, small boats, and light aircraft. Even though electronic fuel injection technology has more advantages like flexibility, reliability and complexity, its higher cost makes carburetors a better choice for small engines. The basic function of a carburetor is to ensure the right mix of air and gasoline into the engine. The carburetor comprises of a tube with an adjustable plate called the throttle placed across it. This throttle controls the amount of air that flows through the tube. The carburetor tube narrows down at a place called the venture, where a vacuum is created. There is a hole in this narrowing called the jet that allows the fuel to be drawn in because of the vacuum. There are several parts in a carburetor that allow for smooth functioning. The parts are the pilot, pilot airscrew, throttle valve, jet needle, needle jet, air jet, and main jet. Other important parts are the choke, accelerator pump, float chamber, and barrels that help to create the ideal mixture of gas and air in the engine.Carburetors have improved over the years in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Their emissions standards have are much better and adhere to environmental standards. This is also another reason for the increased use of carburetors in smaller machinery. There are many kinds of small engine carburetors. The complexity of the modern machines demand greater sophistication in the carburetor design. Float-type and suction-type are the two main categories of carburetors and there are two kinds of float-type carburetors including one-piece and two-piece. Suction-type carburetors have a built-in fuel pump. The major manufacturers of carburetors are Amal Ltd., Autolite, Carter, Holley, Pierburg, Rochester, Solex, Stromberg, SU, Walbro and Tillotson (small engines), Briggs and Stratton, Villiers, Weber and Zenith. Rebuilt or remanufactured carburetors can also be used in small engines.Carburetors provides detailed information about carburetors, carburetor parts, carburetor tuning, and more. Robotic Car Vacuum; Dirt Seeking Robots

Author : Lance Winslow
One of the coolest innovations in the last few years for personal technology devices around the home, surely has to be the iRobot "Romba" robotic vacuum cleaner. I mean come on, that is just too cool, you gotta love those research engineers who came up with that one. But now we need to challenge them to come up with another unit that can clean my car. I mean have you seen my car lately?I do not have time to go to a carwash, nor do I want all the change stolen from my ashtray or to read any signs, which say; "We are not responsible for items stolen from your car!" Oh really, well then is that to say you are anticipating stealing items from my car if I allow you to clean my automobile? And if so, why on Earth would I want to take my car to get washed by a bunch of thieves or even bother to pay you with my ATM or credit card? Dah?So, I guess we are all stuck on vacuuming our own cars? Or are we? Why not get a little gizmo robotic car vacuum unit to do it for us? I bet they would sell a gazillion of them? But how exactly would this work you ask?Well, I propose it be made small so it can crawl under the seats or made with Velcro Tracks so it can climb over them and then fall to the floor and start on the next row of seats in my SUV. It could also be in the shape of a tube, which would wiggle around and vacuum all the dust.http://www.roboticstrends.com/dev1/storyimages/OmniTread2sm.jpgPersonally I guess we do not care how they make it really, just make one that works and we will buy it. We need our car interiors cleaned and we need a better way to do it than to risk our personal items being stolen at a car wash. Think on this in 2006.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. Style Over Power

Author : Jason Moore
The Ford Escort has been roaming the streets of Europe since 1961, however, North American was introduced to this vehicle in 1981. This was crafted basically after inspiration hit over the success of its European model. And if the Ford Escort has been a success in Europe, it has well been another success for the Ford Motor Company, its manufacturer, with its introduction to the US.This vehicle shares most of its parts with the European Ford Escort Mk 3. However, this vehicle, the Ford Escort of North America, bears a design and styling that is different from its European counterpart. When it was introduced, Ford made certain that it was available in two body styles that comprised of the 3-door hatchback and the wagon that sported four doors. It was also manufactured in five trim levels that include the base, the L, the GL, the GLX, and the SS. This vehicle come equipped with a small engine that starts with the 1.6 liter 68 hp upon its introduction, up until the 2.0 liter 130 hp engine that was mounted on the final version of the Ford Escort – the Ford Escort ZX2. What was standard was a 4-speed manual transmission, and given as an option was the 3-speed automatic transmission.Revolutionary when talking in terms of its style, the Ford Escort was a squared-off modern hatchback with an attractive rear bustle. This was actually developed by Mazda, the Ford Motor Company's Japanese partner. This vehicle held something unique for even the Princess of Wales and Sarah Ferguson drove Ford Escorts for themselves. Moreover, this vehicle claimed the top spot as the world's top selling nameplate. The Ford Escort held its head high above competition more because of its style rather than the power and performance that it held since its power and performance was considered to be meager. This vehicle proved to its patrons that it was a capable, reliable, and practical car at a relatively affordable price. In Britain and the rest of Europe, the Ford Escort was a legend and eventually became an icon. Come 2002, the entire Ford Escort line up has been replaced by the Ford Focus. Even if this vehicle has come to its end in terms of manufacture, the Ford Escort still is remembered fondly by those who have come to own and use it. Thus, the Ford Escort was considered and held the reputation as a capable and reliable car in every aspect.Ford Parts and Ford Auto PartsFord Escort parts---------------------Jason Moore, a 35 year old freelance writer from Austin, Texas. Car Care: Look After Your Car Or Prepare To Spend A Lot Of Money

Author : Justin Brown
Owning a car can be very costly after calculating expenses such as day-to-day running costs in terms of fuel, MOT and tax, insurance, and other costs that we may have like finance payments. Additionally, repair and maintenance to vehicles that are not looked after by their owners can be the highest expense of all, but one that can be somewhat controlled by carrying out relatively simple steps. Most of these checks are straightforward and can be done in a short amount of time. They can also be conducted for next to nothing, but can save a lot of money and inconvenience over time.Check the motor oil every month. This is uncomplicated and requires you to locate and remove the dipstick, wipe it to remove any oil and then reinsert and remove a second time. You will then be able to discover whether to add oil if the level is low. Also try to change the oil quartely to maintain peak performance.Check the air filter every month and replace it if it is dirty.Take a look at the spark pugs to see if they are worn. Worn spark plugs can cause the engine to run poorly, and also increase exhaust emissions.Check the coolant level every week and ensure that the amount in the car is not below the level required.Keep the brake fluid level at the required level and check monthly.Every month, check the level of the power steering fluid, simply by removing the reservoir dipstick and adding fluid if the level is down.Ensure that all tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. Take a look over the tyres to check for any cuts and bulges, and also check for tyre wear to make sure that the tyres are not so worn down that it is unsafe to drive the car. Ensuring that the tyres and correctly aligned will also prolong tyre life. For safety, and to get the most out of your tyres, rotate your tyres from front to rear every 5000 miles or so.Replace the windscreen wiper blades should they appear worn or function incorrectly.Check that all lights on the exterior of the vehicle are in working order and clean. Have someone help you check that the brake lights and reversing light also work. Keep spare bulbs in the car just in case. Finally, take a look over the vehicle for any other wear and tear, such as broken exhaust clamps. It's also beneficial in the long-run to keep on top of any appearance of rust. This will ensure that you gain the best possible price for the vehicle when it comes to selling it.Whenever you perform these checks, always refer to the owner's manual, especially when performing any technical maintenance task. Although you should carry out at least the checks laid out here frequently, it is also highly important to have the vehicle thoroughly tested by a qualified car mechanic.Justin Brown is the owner of the site http://www.idealauto.co.uk where you can find various vehicle equipment and also sell any used cars in the UK.

Car Tune Up

Author : Jerry Lemke
A tune up is a simple task that almost anyone can do. This will make your vehicle more fuel efficient. This applies for any motorized vehicle. The filters are a good place to start. Depending how often you do a tune up will affect how much of an improvement that you will see. Most mechanics suggest a tune up by 60,000 miles. The engine air filter can be your first tune up item. The air filter is located over a carburetor on older cars. The air filter is in the airbox on fuel injected motors. The fuel filter can be located anywhere between your engine and the fuel tank and should also be replaced. If the fuel filter is clogged it can make your engine run lean. Many times if your check engine light has been on it is due to the o2 sensor not working correctly. This is normally only replaced when it fails but usually will not last long anyways. Now is also a good time to have your transmission filter replaced. If the transmission filter has alot of miles on it the transmission could be slipping.Replacing this may need to be done by a mechanic, unless you feel comfortable enough to it. The filter is usually found under the transmission pan. The transmission filter will usually pull straight down and out. Unless you have the scarce, screw on filter like saturns. The ignition system is also very important and requires attention. The spark plug wires will usually wear out even faster than the 60,000 mile tune up. Try half that mileage and it will save you money and troubles. Spark plug wires wear out and lose resistance, making the car run rough and use more fuel. While replacing the spark plug wires it is also a good idea to replace the distributor cap and rotor. The engine's distributor cap will come off easy, usually with two screws. It may be easiest to remove the distributor cap first to keep the wires running to the correct spark plug. When the cap is removed, the rotor will be located under it and usually has a push in tab to release it. Reinstall the new distributer cap and proceed to remove one spark plug wire only. Now it is time to replace the spark plugs. The spark plugs will usually come out with a 5/8" or 13/16" socket. Replace the spark plug with a new compatible plug. Check the gap with a feeler gauge and tap on or pry the electrode back in until you have the gap the size it needs to be. Most engines run the spark plug gap between .030" and .045" depending on the vehicle. Now refer to the wire set up on the old distributor cap. Trace the one wire back to where it needs to be on the new cap. Do this to all the wire and plugs so that they can't be mixed up. The ignition timing should also be checked by connecting a timing light to #1 spark plug wire. The timing setting should be around 8 to 12 degrees advanced or zero on newer cars. The actual timing spec, along with the spark plug gap, will be displayed under the hood on a tag. Also if excessive oil was found in the air filter, you should replace the PCV (positive crankcase valve) which will be usually be found in the head, valve cover or air cleaner/box. If there is no oil in the air filter then the PCV valve is o.k. This will return your car to the factory oem specs and will probably improve the power, smoothness and fuel economy.Jerry Lemke is the author of http://www.freeengineinfo.com A site for information for repair and modification of various vehicles.
