Many people such as science fiction writers and futurists talk about the future of information technologies. In these futures we often hear talk about the war between humans and machines. Many people such as conspiracy theorists are worried about the future of IT or information technologies and they say that say that soon information technologies will be running the world using artificially intelligent brains.Currently many factories are completely robotic and the information technology systems allow them to run efficiently and effectively, while the machine makes all the decisions. But in reality what is the difference between making products, paper boxes or automobiles than with treating people in a hospital, training little humans in school or running a Police Department? Not much actually and if you think about it is all about systems management. Finite capacity scheduling models can be used to best make a hospital run efficiently. Net centric systems are now used to fight wars. We already use similar strategies in all the flows of modern civilizations, so why not streamline them with IT systems? Indeed, and we are doing that now.Supercomputers allow us to use similar strategies for weather monitoring, calculating mathematics for our space department and mapping the genome of various species. By uniting supercomputers with net centric systems and allowing all the data to flow from information technology system points into the artificial intelligent brain of a computer then you can understand what the science-fiction writers and futurists are talking about. This is an obvious future and it is the way the world is moving. It is not good or bad, but it could become either if we do not pay attention. It makes sense to design artificially intelligent machines, which can handle all the needs of humans and in the future they will be smarter than humans and it makes sense to use maximum intelligence to run our civilizations and systems. So perhaps you might consider all this in 2006.Lance Winslow, a retired entrepreneur, adventurer, modern day philosopher and perpetual tourist.
